ELTHAM HOCKEY TEAMS BEATEN. •The ladies’ hockey competitions were advanced a further stage at Kaponga on Thursday when the local team was beaten by Elthaiu. In tho first spell there was no score, although the visitors' had the advantage, play being mainly in Kaponga territory. In the second spell tho visitors showed much better combination in the forward line and witlpn ten minutes scored their first goal. After a good hit to the front line from the visitors’ backs the ball was carried up-field and sent in by the right wing to the circle, whence, the inside right wing scored the second goal. The visitors scored again and the game ended Eltham 3, Kaponga nil. The goals for the winning team were scored by Misses L. Potts (2) and Taylor (1). The Rev. J. A. Ryburn and Mr. K. Pennington were the referees. Following the ladies’ match the second round of the men’s competition was continued, the game being between Eltham and Kaponga. The crowd were treated to a fast exciting game although there were far too many free hits for obstruction from both sides. The match was drawn, three goals each. A lucky chance gave the ball to C. Harding and he took it into the circle to secure the first goal for Kaponga. The defence of both sides was effective, but Page evened the score after receiving the ball from his right wing, W. Gower. The second spell opened with a hot attack by Eltham and in about eight minutes Page netted the' visitors’ second goal. It was well on in the spell before Kaponga obtained an opening. S. Betts carried play down field with such good effect that he was able to shoot Kaponga’s , second goal. The Kaponga forwards went past Eltham’s 25, where, from a good centre form the left wing, S. Betts secured the ball just at the circle and with a hard hit drove the ball into the net. The ball struck the stick of an Eltham player, K. Knuekey, glancing off into tiie net. Within two minutes of time Gray scored a sensational goal for Eltham. Following the bully off he obtained possession of the ball and overwhelmed the home side’s hack division, tearing his way through them to score the last goal. The Rev. J. A. Ryburn (Eltham); and Mr. 0. J. McFadgeri (Hawera) refereed the match.

GENERAL AND PERSONAL. The Stratford entertainers who staged a really good minstrel show at the Town Hall on Thursday were unfortunate so far as the weather conditions were concerned. The night was extremely rough and consequently tho attendance was small. The first half of the programme was arranged as an old-time minstrel show. Air. P. Skoglund (Massa Johnson) was in charge of the “coons,” Messrs. Pickles, Hook, Marsh, Hignett, McPherson, Sandford, Vinscn, Healy, Harper, Payne, Bellringer and Coc. The second portion of the programme comprised solos, diiets, quartettes and sketches. The company was well supported by the orchestra. Mr. Y. .Toogood, Palmer Road, while felling trees on his farm recently received a cut on the shoulder and other injuries which necessitated medical aid. Miss G. Arnold, Inglewood, who has been staying with Mrs. A. T. Belli, has returned home. Mr. J. Olsen, Wanganui, is staying with his sister, Airs. Albert Harris. Air. and Airs. A. T- Heydon have returned from a holiday in the Waikato and Rotorua districts.
