FOUR SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT

MEREMERE WIN WILLIAMS CUP. OHANGAI RETAIN M.O.W.M. CUP. The playing of the inter-school lootball and basketball matches of the Mokoia, Whakamara, Ohangai and Moremere schools all on one day proved most successful, and there was a large gathering at Mokoia yesterday. Ihe Ohangai school, which won both the Williams Cup (football) and M.O.W.M. Cup (basketball) last year, retained the latter trophy, but had to yield the Kirrby premiership to Meremere, who were ‘fortunate in having the services of an outstanding boy in \V. Dunlop. RUGBY GAMES. Whakamara, with the wind, attacked in the first spell against Ohangai and Dobson scored from a dribbling rush. They held the advantage well in the second spell and there was no further scoring. Meremere carried too many guns tor Mokoia, winning by 14 points to nil. In the first spell W. Dunlop scored three tries and converted one, and in the second spell A. Dunlop scored another try. Meremere had a narrow win over Whakamara by 6 points to 3. The first score came to Whakamara, J. Gulliver scoring wide out. In the second spell W. Dunlop kicked a penalty goal and scored a good try, running from halfway. Ohangai put up the big score of 31 points against Mokoia. W. Dyson scored twice under the posts in the first, spelt and L. Trott also notched a try, Rangiton rr a kicking goals from the two former In the second half Rangitonga scored three tries and W. Dyson one, Rangitonga kicking three - more goals. In what was virtually the final between Ohangai and Meremeie W. Dunlop put up a great performance, scoring all 14 points, two tries, a field goal, a penalty goal and a conversion, though Ohangai pressed very strongly in the first few minutes when playing against jjio wind, they could not take advantage of the breeze when it was with them. Williams, chairman of the committee controlling the tournament, who remarked that it was good to see the interest in the competitions well maintained, as he hoped it would be for many seasons to come. NORMANBY NEWS. TOWN BOARD MEETING. REDUCED RATES STRUCK. The monthly meeting of the Normanby Town Board on Tuesday night was attended by Messrs. E. T. Peach (chairman), T. Evans, C. Coxhead and E.- J. Mcßeth. Rates for the current year were struck as follow’: General 2Jd, county 2jd, a ’total of 4-Jd. This is Id less than the rates for the previous year. The foreman, Mr. D. Henderson, re ported on work done on Ngaronga Road. Stafford, Bowen and Egmont Streets and Ohangai Road. Work done by the unemployed under scheme No. 5 included the formation of footpaths. A proposal to complete the remaining six chains of metalling on Ngaronga Road was deferred as following a lengthy discussion. Tho voting was even and the chairman declined to use his casting vote. The clerk was instructed to collect a fee of £2 per annum for all kerbside pct. rol pumps in the town area. A list of all outstanding rates was presented and it was decided to forward this to the board’s solicitors for collection. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. A large assembly gathered in St. Paul’s Anglican church hall, Normanby, on Thursday, the evening being a kitchen tea in honour of Miss E. Flintofl, who is soon to be married. Mr. George Gallowav on behalf of the gathering made the presentations. Mr. D. Hicks responded on behalf of Miss Flintoff. Music, games and dancing occupied most of the cvcn-
