FOOD FOR UNEMPLOYED

APPEAL’S WONDERFUL RESULT. BUSY SCENE AT HAWERA BOOMS. “Our appeal has been answered in a really wonderful spirit and we could wish for nothing better,” said Mrs. E.’ A. Pacey, president of the Hawera branch of the Women’s National Reserve at the Rest Room yesterday. All around, men and women who comprised the willing band of helpers were tying parcels, cutting meat, and dividing up groceries. The food at the depot was the answer of the people of South Taranaki to the appeal of the reserve to “bring along a pound” of something of the necessaries of life for distribution among the unemployed families in the district who might be suffering as the result of the suspension of relief work. .. As the result of personal investigation by members of the reserve, 50 parcels were immediately sent to families in straitened circumstances. These parcels all contained meat, a lamb and a pig being disposed of during the day. Included also were many of the necessaries of life such as butter, bread and vegetables. To-day Mrs. Pacey, Mrs. J. W. Harding and Miss A. Ballantine will pay visits in the district and town. Tickets, of which they will have duplicates, will be given families. These will show the amount and nature of the food which the bearers will receive upon their presentation at the depot. This room will be open from 10 to 12 and 1 to 5 every day, and different members of the reserve will be in attendance. Gifts of goods will be received and families in difficulties and not yet visited by the ladies on the round will be attended to. The next pound gift day will be on Thursday, and it is hoped the answer to the appeal will be as excellent as yesterday’s. Mrs. Morse’s visits had had an equally good response and her collection of food was taken to the depot. “I must say how the member of the reserve appreciate the ready assistance and co-operation of the three or four unemployed men who have assisted us all day,” said Mrs. Pacey in conclusion. “They have been wonderful; carrying, cutting meat, and tying parcels.” .The offer of cars for the delivery of parcels this morning would be greatly appreciated. Drivers can be found for the cars if necessary. WAVERLEY LADIES’ GOLF. RESULTS OF RECENT PLAY. Recent play at the Waverley Ladies’ Golf Club shows- that the players are well in form.
