ROOT-JUDGING IN THE SOUTH

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS RESULT. HEAVIEST CROP AT HURLEYVILLE Judging in connection with the boys’ and. girls’ root crop competition has been carried out during the past few days in the northern portion of the Wanganui education district, including Alton, Hurley ville, Kakaramea, Whenuakura and Kohi. The officers engaged in the work are Messrs. J. B. Hogg, agricultural instructor to the Wanganui Education Board, and T. W. Loxusdale, of the Department of Agriculture, who were yesterday at Alton and Harleyville, where some excellent results were obtained. The heaviest crop of mangolds judged yesterday and the heaviest yet encountered was that of Laura Burkhart at Harleyville. The return was 1191 tons to the acre. At Alton the crop of Arnott Foreman returned 117 J tone to the acre. The varieties grown were: Mangolds, Prizewinner, Yellow Globe; carrots, Matchless White; swedes, Masterpiece. By far the largest number- of plots judged wae at the Whenuakura echool, where, in the school grounds there were 31 plots, giving an excellent yield. “The yields throughout have been very satisfactory, though a little less than last year,” said Mr. Hogg. “Quality and cultivation have in many cases been excellent, showing that the activity in previous years is bearing fruit. The children are taking an increasing interest in the w'Ork, many having been entrants for the past three or four years. There is no doubt that the work possesses a high educative value, particularly when the children return to the farms, as many of them will during the next two or three years.” The judges were entertained at luncheon at Alton yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Gibbs. In the following results, the figures represent points awarded for cultivation (40) and quality (10).. The third column represents the yield in tons per acre, based on l/80th acre plots. The charts will be judged later, when the full results will be published.
