“CANNOT BE SOCIALISTS"

London, June 17. “It will generally be admitted that very few British Labour people, certainly no Catholic Labour people, would deny the right of private ownership, or preach a class war which the Pope’S encyclical 'i strongly condemns,” said Cardinal Bourne in an address at Edinburgh, when answering questions from Catholics regarding the British parties to which they might belong. “Doubtless there are some Labour people who are technically Socialists, which * true Catholic cannot be, but the Catholic must walk warily and, while accepting his party’s policy, must guard against a theory of action conflicting with the Church’s teachings or contrary to the dictates of conscience, which he must assert frankly and courageously,” added Cardinal Bourne. He emphasised that a Catholic eduld' not ally himself wholly with any party which was largely composed of non-Catholio.
