SUSPENSION OF SCHEME 5

CONCERN IN THE COMMUNITY. Advice concerning the suspension of the No. 5 unemployment scheme was conveyed in a letter received by the Stratford Borough Council hist night from the Unemployment Board. The Mayor said he knew that a considerable amount of anxiety prevailed in New Zealand at the suspension of the scheme, and it might be necessary for the council to take steps to provide relief for the local unemployed. He did not propose to discuss the matter at once and suggested that it might be left to the finance committee to call, if necessary, a special meeting on Friday night to deal fully with the whole question. The proposal was adopted unanimously. STRATFORD COURT CASES. CIVIL JUDGMENTS BY DEFAULT. Mr. R. W. Rickleben appeared and pleaded not guilty to charges of dangerous driving and being drunk in charge of a light motor truck. The case was adjourned till the next court day on the application of Sergeant J. J. Power, who said he had not known that the case was to be defended and consequently had advised his witnesses that they would not bo needed. OBLIGATIONS OF DEBTORS. INFORMATION FOR THE COURT. On every judgment summons served on a debtor there is a paragraph instructing the debtor to have with him, if-he defends the action, a statement showing his earnings and his expenditure since the time judgment was first taken. Yesterday three cases of judgment summons proceedings were heard at the Stratford oCurt by Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., who entered judgment against the debtors, none of whom was present at the time. Later they arrived with excuses for the delay but without statements of their receipts and expenditure. Two men had not noticed the paragraph while the other said he read only when and where the case would be heard. ‘'Judgment debtors must realise that they have to bring statements to court,” said Mr. Tate in adjourning the cases till next court day to give the debtors an opportunity to prepare their statements and to show why orders should not be made against them. Ten public vehicles medical certificates bad been issued and had been returned from the medical practitioners as “clear certificates” and the licenses had been issued. Four private vehicles medical certificates had been issued, of which three had been returned clear and one rejected as hearing had not conformed to the standard laid down by the regulations. That license had been considered by the council, which had granted it. The sight of 13 applicants for drivers’ licenses for private cars had not conformed to the standard without glasses. Their licenses had been endorsed “to drive with aid of glasses’’ according to the regulations.
