DOGS EXHIBITED

GOOD QUALITY ANIMALS

. JUDGING AT WINTER SHOW ' EXHIBITION IN FULL SWING COMPLETION OF PRIZE LIST The judging of the exhibits at the Taranaki Agricultural Society’s 22nd winter show at New Plymouth concluded yesterday, when the show was in full ewing. The dog and rabbit sections. opened yesterday and proved a great attraction, ae did the poultry classes, which were judged on Wednesday. To-day will be the last day of the show, and it is anticipated that the attendances will be heavy. “Although the entries in the dog sections are not very numerous, the quality is excellent and many of the dogs that gained first prizes have been shown ' extensively at metropolitan shows,” said the judge, Mr. Norman Wade. The ' beat dog was Mrs. Lacey’s King Bowdler, probably one of the most travelled dogs of recent years, continued the judge, and during that time it had never failed to reach the highest honours. The Terriers were of good quality and the best wire or smooth Terrier was Mr. Patterson’s Ryburn Rivalry, a wire-haired bitch of excellent type and sound all over. The runner-up was a smooth-coated terrier, a very short- * . backed little dog with fine legs and feet which lost ,to a bitch with strength of neck, expression and freedom of movement. Of the other Terriers there was an Irish belonging to Mr. D. H. Edgar, an Airedale bitch belonging to Mr. J. S. King and a Scotch Terrier belonging to Miss Gavin. These were very even and took some trouble in sorting out, and the award eventually went to the Irish Terrier, which was better than , the others in coat on the day. The rough-coated Collie classes were not big. The hitherto unbeaten champion dog belonging to Mr. Prickett’s struck its colours to a newcomer in Miss J. Corkill’s Squire. The winner was full of Collie character and type, being shorter and stronger in the back and sound all over. The judge predicted a good future for the winning Collie. The winning Setter was a fair sort but the remainder were not up to first-class standard. The number of toy dogs was disappointing, but the winner in the Pomeranian class, belonging to Miss Daisley, was a sound little dog with a good dark eye and a sharp expression, continued the judge. Of the Bulldogs, the •winning dog and bitch were first-class specimens capable of holding their own in any company. The special was awarded to the bitch, which was harder and better conditioned. The judge recommended the owner of the winning dog, Mr. Hawkins, to pay more attention to exercise and training the dog, for if it were more fit prizes would probably come its way. The Alsatians were of good quality, the special going to a young pup, Thor of Glen. Lodge (Mr. 0. Al. Nasmith), which was shown for the first time. It was a young dog of splendid temperament, well proportioned, of a good colour and well gaited. Only one greyhound was shown, but this was a good bitch. “Noticeable absentees from the show .are Borzois, deerhounds, Great Danes, greyhounds, and harriers, and this is regrettable for if dog lovers are to affect these breeds it.will be a tremendous encouragement to . the executives of kennel clubs throughout New Zealand,” continued Mr. Wade. “All these breeds are dogs of the larger variety, create a tremendous effect in a show and arc eagerly looked for by a large number of people. “I know there are a great number of greyhounds which might be shown, but . the lack of interest by the owners is a great handicap, to the show_ promoters. Among the hounds housed in the kennels of the respective hunt clubs are many notable dogs, some of which are recent importations of high class. If, for no other purpose than educational, a little trouble were taken by the masters and huntsmen, it would be well rewarded by the appreciation of the public. Hounds are gaily coloured, obviously brainy, and make a distinctive showing on the benches.” AWARDS IN DOG SECTION. The. judge of the dog section, Mr. Norman Wade, made the following awards:— > ALSATIANS. DOGS. Puppy, under six months.—o. M. Nasmith’s Lord Bing of Glen Lodge 1. Puppy, under 12 months.—o. M.
