ASSISTANCE FOR THE POOR.

WOMENIS DIVISION ENTERPRISE

A display of New Zealand woollen goods manufactured within the Dominion is to be staged at the Hawera Winter Show by the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, according to a decision arrived at by a special meeting of the Hawera branch of that body yesterday, hire. T. J. Allan presided over a good attendance of members. The woollen articles are to be procured as much as possible from local tradespeople, but it was also decided to communicate with the different manufacturers with a view to obtaining exhibits from them too.

Mr. L. 0. Hooker's offer to assist as much as postfible with this work was accepted with thanks. The offer of Messrs L. A. Bone and F. Bone to assist with the dressing .- -rangements of the exhibit was gratefully accepted. With regard to assisting the poor and needy, members decided to bring articles of food and clothing to each meeting for distribution among the poorer families.

NORMANBY NEWS. J ■- - — SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. The monthly meeting of the Normanby school committee was held on Monday night, when there were present Messrs. E. T. Peach (chairman), W. McCaffery (secretary), D. M. Cowie, the Rev. J. Watson, P. Lion and T. Taylor (headmaster). The headinaster reported that owing to whooping cough the attendance had been considerably lower, during the month,. but the pupils were making a good recovery and many were back at school again. Alterations in the staff had been effected, Mrs. Peach being absent on sick leave and Mr. Martin commencing duties on May 23. Miss K. Tarrant commenced duties as relieving teacher on June 1. During the month Messrs. R. Syme and J. Palmer, of the Agricultural Department, twice visited the school. The junior Red Cross was flourishing and almost all the middle and upper class pupils were members. Under the guidance of Sister Ingles the children were keenly interested. The newly formed orchestra was making satisfactory progress and Mr. Martin was assisting in the work. Alterations by the Education Board’s workmen had been completed. During the holidays the school was thoroughly cleaned. • Ten children were attending the dental clinic each week and they were experiencing no difficulty as to transport. Cocoa was being provided for the children during the cold weather. The furnishing of the teachers’ room by the junior Red Cross had been completed and a first aid equipment had been installed. The first round of the school football competition was completed and the Normanby team had won two games and lost two. The girls’ basketball team had played two games, winning one and losing one. A great improvement had been effected through having the ventilation attended to, thug enabling the closing of the rear doors but shutting out the south wind.

Mr. Taylor was empowered to purchase a set of supplementary readers for trio school and matting for the floor of tho teachers’ room.

In order to procure a supply of firewood for the winter it was decided to cut down the macrocapa tree in the school paddock, Mr. Peach to superintend the work.

It was decided to reduce the charge for the school euchre social and to hold a working bee to prepare the hall for tho function.

The chairman reported that he had attended the school committees’ annual conference at Okaiawa. He outlined tho various points brought forward and the ensuing discussion upon them. Members congratulated the chairman on his report and complimented him on the interest taken by him in the school affairs.

Mr. T. J. Martin Levonsen has been appointed to Normanby school as substitute assistant.

Mrs. E. T. Peach is on sick leave from the Normanby school, her place ibeing taken on June 1 by Miss K. Tarrant, Eltham. Mr. W. Berrett has returned from Auckland, where he has been spending a holiday. Mr. H. Young is still indisposed through the injury to his arm, but is making satisfactory progress. Mr. Parslow, who has been farming for 18 years on Sir Wm. Le Fleming’s property on Mountain Road, will leave the district at tho end of the month. Mr. E. J. Linn is home from hospital. Mr. L. Corrigan junr., who has been on a visit to the Auckland district, has returned home.

Miss V. Gordon, Patea, was the guest of Mies L. Hurliman during the week. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Linn, New Plymouth, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. Galloway.
