REPLACING RUGBY PLAYERS

UNION REVERSES ITS DECISION.

PROPOSAL FOR CONFERENCE.

Wellington, Last Night. Reversing its previous decision on the question of replacing injured players, the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night decided to “adhere to the wishes of delegates to the annual meeting” and continue the present custom. This means replacements will be allowed so long as the opposing captains agree. Letters were received from Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui and Canterbury protesting against the decision to seek a ruling from England and abide by it. The chairman, Mr. S. S. Dean, said a sub-committee had been set up to draft a letter, but at his request the question had been held up as he felt it would be better if the whole matter were sent to the proposed Rugby conference. A letter received by Mr. S. Wilson, Canterbury Union, from Mr. James Baxter, England, had suggested that the conference was not so very far off. Mr. Dean suggested waiting to see how the request for a conference was received by the International Board. If its reception were favourable a remit could be sent to the conference.
