NEW PLYMOUTH SHOW

WET WEATHER FOR SECOND DAY

KEEN INTEREST IN POULTR Y SECTION

WHOLE EXHIBITION OPEN TO-DAY

'PHE weather was decidedly unpleasant for the second day of the New. Plymouth Winter Show yesterday. Heavy rain which fell throughout the afternoon not only militated against the attendance but also made matters unpleasant for those whose stalls were in the open, as was the case with the side-show men. E ortunately, the weather cleared in the evening and there was a large attendance, the figures for the day, exclusive of those who were the possssors Oi members’ tickets, being 1700, as compared with 2031 for the second day of last year.

The interior of the hall presented an animated appearance as the crowds inspected the numerous exhibits, and found much to interest thfem. Outside there was plenty to amuse. On all sides were heard expressions of appreciation of the splendid arrangements, whilst the general excellence of the exhibits was also the subject oi comment.

Yesterday was a busy day, the judging of the poultry show continuing well into the afternoon, for while the exhibits were numerically as great as usual the quality was generally of hig standard, giving the judges no enviable task. lhe bantams we. very strong, a black rosecomb cockerel exhibited by H. McNeill taking numerous prizes as well as being adjudged the best bird m the show.

The judging in the rabbit section, a very popular section with the children, and in the school section was also completed, 10-day will see the New Plymouth Kennel Club’s Show open, and as it is also town school children’s day there should be a large attendance. The show will close to-morrow, when it will be the country children’s day. An efficient band of ladies has taken control of the catering, which is again a special feature.

HIGH QUALITY EXHIBITS -REMARKS OF POULTRY JUDGES. ■ SOME OF BIRDS OUTSTANDING. Commenting on the utility section the judge, Mr. Edward Jones, New Plymouth, remarked that there were very fine birds in the White Leghorn section; they were fit to win in most shows in the Dominion. A pleasing feature was that the size was being maintained. The ■winning hen owned by Mr. McAloon was particularly good, with beautiful texture and wgll developed, and so was Mr. A. P. Lister’s winning cockerel, which , had splendid carriage! The judge enoke enthusiastically regarding the many good points of Mr. McAloon’s winning pullett. Brown Leghorns were not so numerous but were well up to standard.'. The Orpingtons were a particularly good section. There were one or two good Wyandotte and Sussex shown. The Minorcas were exceptionally good; the winning cockerel shown by A. P. Lister was a credit to any man and the judge considered his bird would go a long way without being defeated. There were some -exceptionally fine bantams; indeed vthat section provided the best bird in the show. - The fancy poultry section,, though not so strong numerically as previously, was first-class so far as quality was concerned, said Mr. A. C. Johnstone, the judge. He instanced the Silver Wyandotte, Golden Wyandotte and Brown Leghorn classes. The English White Leghorns were few in number but remarkably good in quality. The Orpingtons were not up to the usual New Plymouth standard. Another class deserving praise was the Minorca class —not for a long time had Mr. Johnstone seen such quality. The Campines were fair but the Hamburgs were weak except for two birds. In the barred Plymouth class the winning cock was the best he had seen for many years, possessing very fine colouring. The game bantams as a section were the best yet seen at New Plymouth and were fit to compete in open company in any part of the world. Mr. L. C. Purlon said the pigeons on the whole formed a very good class. The winner of the society’s trophy was a clear-cut bird, the best he had seen in an extensive experience as judge and exhibitor. Another very fine bird was the winner in the '2OO miles class —a red cock of fine build. The organisation and arrangements had been admirable, but several birds had been out of condition and this he attributed to the youthfulness of exhibitors. The judge of the canaries, Mr. G. Fleming, expressed himself as somewhat disappointed with the exhibits, remarking that apparently they had not been too well catered for in the past in Taranaki. He stressed the necessity for young breeders concentrating on one class of bird. The committee responsible for thp organisation were: Messrs. H. J. Hall (chairman), F. J. Aldous, J. Cavaney, H. Curline, F. Hatcher, J. K. Hawkins, E. James, J. J. James, A. P. Lister, A. i. Moore, H. J. Moverley, A. B. Meiklejohn, J. Mclntosh, T. Smellie, C. 0.
