SAVED ROTORUA FROM TE KOOTI
By the death of Tolie To Mate Ilaerc the Arawas lose an old-time leader who had established a brave reputation. His death occurred at his home .at Waitete on June.l, at the age of 90 jears. His history was closely connected with that of Rotorua; in fact he is credited with saving the town from destruction in 1870 by Te Kooti. ‘ As the story is told, Tobe jvas piesent with Captain Gilbert Mairs loyal forces near the site of the Presbyteiian Church in Rotorua, when the forces of Te Kooti assembled at Ohincmutu. There Te Kooti was endeavouring to persuade the Arawas of his peaceful intentions, and Captain Mair hurried to the scene. On arrival lie found an Arawa chief with a white flag about to permit le Kooti’s men to approach. Knowing the danger, he seized the flag and trampled upon it. and urged the Arawas to attack. They were reluctant to do so until young Tohe dashed forward with Captain Mair, and the others speedily followed. Thus was le Kooti defeated and a massacre averted.
