ANNUAL BELL BLOCK ROAD RACE.
THOMPSON’S TEAM AVIN SHIELD.
The New Plymouth harriers held their annual teams’ race on Saturday for the Robertson Shield. A fairly strong westerly was blowing- and there was a prospect of rain at any part of the race. After starting the runners did not find the race as hard as expected. The limit harriers started off at 2.30 and 7min. 20sec. afterwards H. Brown, scratch, left on the run of nearly six miles. The first ip an reach the monument was M. White, who was running well. All the others had closed up a lot and Brown was in a handy position. On the return journey the back marKersmade steady progress. Along the Waiwakaiho flat C. Robertson took the lead from White and held it till he reached the bridge when Brown passed him, not to be headed again. The first three men home were , Brown, Robertson and Kingston. The teams’ race provided the greatest interest and resulted' in a win for A. J. . Thompson’s team ■ with Kingston’s team second and Brown’s team third by a point.

In the evening a tea was given at the Devon for the presentation of trophies for the first race and the shield and medals for the Bell Block race. The officials were, Mr. Hutchinson (starter and handicapper), Messrs. Clarke and Deem (timekeepers), Messrs. F. Eaddy and Warner (judges). The next three runs will be: —June 13, showgrounds; June 20, East End beach; June 27, race from racecourse.
