TOURISTS FROM ORIENT

POSSIBILITIES OF TRAFFIC.

ADVANTAGES OF DOMINION.

The opinion that New Zealand has great opportunities of developing a tourist traffic from the Far East is held by Mr. Will Lawson, of Sydney, who is visiting Auckland to deliver a series of lectures on the Orient. Mr. Lawson has been a month in the Dominion.

In referring to the possibilities of bringing about a highly profitable extension of the tourist business, Mr. Lawson said it was estimated that there were 100,000 people in responsible and highly-paid positions in the great commercial cities of the Far East. New Zealand could with advantage endeavour to encourage visitors from these cities. “The scenic attractions of the Dominion are not yet fully realised abroad,” said Mr. Lawson. ‘‘They a!re of a type which is certain to attract residents in the East, who on holiday desire an atmosphere the direct antithesis of that in the East. Australia generally is too hot, and they would prefer temperate New Zealand. Many residents in the East undertake a long and tedious journey to the United Kingdom when they are in need of a change. New Zealand is much closer and its scenery is thoroughly satisfying.” Mr. Lawson considers it probable that a shipping concern in the East will shortly turn its attention to the Dominion. He will attend a conference of representatives of Dominion tourist organisations at Wellington on June 10.
