Christchurch, Last Night. • Another Conference was held this afternoon between representatives of the Tramway Board and the Tramway Em- z ployees’ UiilOil in an endeavour to compose the differences between the two The board, invoking the special powers conferred by its special Act, withdrew from the jurisdiction of the Arbitration Court and announced a slight reduction in pay ftiid considerable alterations in working conditions with the object of reducing overtime costs, particularly for Sunday work. The union refused to accept the new conditions and offered, -o accept a 10 per cent, cut in wages. Conferences pi'oVed abortive. Yesterday the board at a meeting agreed to meet the union at another conference to-day. This conference lasted two hours and a half with several adjournments to enable each side to consider privately proposals and counterproposals. Another conference is to be held in a fmV days, probably early next week, and the board has agreed to postpone the Operation of the new working conditions, Which were to have come J into force next Monday. To-day th- hoard offered filttlier concessions in the proposed conditions. The union’s representatives made A counter-offer Which, the board is taking time to consider. It has beeii decided to make u combined request that the meeting of Jw Labour Disputes Committee, with Mr. 1. Hallv Conciliation Commissioner, as chairman, which was to have sat to-mor-row, be postponed.
