SPORTS DAY AT TARATA

KEEN SAWING AND CHOPPING RACES AND FIELD EVENTS. SETTLERS’ ANNUAL PICNIC. Chopping, sawing, running and field events were contested at the Tarata settlers’ annual sports in Mr. R. Paterson’s paddock, Tarata, yesterday. There was a good number of athletes and spectators from the surrounding district and the events were all well contested. The officials in charge of the sports were: Patron, Mr. H. Waite; president, Mr. F. M. Standish; starters, Messrs. A. Elliott (chopping), and C. Lowden (running) ; judges, Messrs. J. Hallett, F. M. Standish, H. Oxenham (chopping), J. Smith, A. Bishell, Etu (running); handicappers, Messrs. H. Oxenham, H. Lovell (running), H. Oxenham and A. Muir (chopping), children’s races, Mr. Etu; secretary, Mr. M. L. Standish. Luncheon and afternoon tea arrangements were in charge of a committee convened by Mrs. W. Ludemann.

In the evening an enjoyable dance was held in the Tarata hall, when prizes won during the day were presented. Music was played by Davison’s dance band. Supper arrangements were in charge of Mrs. Ludeihann’s committee, while the dance was organised by Messrs? G. and H. Ludemann, N. Lawrence, P. Rodgers, W-. Topping and M. L. Standish.
