GOOD OLD DAYS
HOUSE FOR A TEACHER. DWELLING ERECTED FOR £57. Away back in the eighties ambition stirred at Tai Tapu, near Christchurch. For some years the sole educational facility in the place had been a church —a Sunday school on Sundays and a day school on week days. It was hopelessly inadequate. Then a school was built, and the district set iL, ambition on a school teacher’s residence. The architect estimated the cost of this mansion at about £5O. The first effort to secure tenders 'was a failure —the estimates of builders, says the Christchurch Times, soared into the grandiose regions of £7O and £75. A fresh attempt was I hen made, and this time two tradesmen offered to do the job for £57. Their tender was accepted, and Tai' Tapu's first scholastic home was raised. The money for the builders was l found only by boil owing. The schoolmaster, whose interest in the enterprise was personal, solved the problem. He advanced £25 to the committee, charging 10 per cent, for the accommodation that permitted it to provide him with a home.
