ISSUE OF SPURIOUS NOTES
ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT MAGISTRATE REFUSES BAIL. By Telegraph-—Press Association. ' ’ Auckland, April 28. The three men arrested in connection with the counterfeiting of bans notes appeared in the Police Court this morning and were remanded till May 5. They were Percy. Short, aged 01, his son Percy John McKenzie Short, aged 20 (both Australian showmen), and Maurice Goodman, aged 33. Short senr. and Goodman were charged that, knowing a fl note to be forged, they caused people to act on it as genuine. Short junr. was charged with vagrancy. , Goodman’s counsel requested bail, saying that Goodman had ‘ lived in Auckland for many years, that his record was unblemished and that he denied his guilt. ... , _ y. Detective Kelly opposed bail, and asserted that with Short Goodman had driven to Hamilton, picking up three other men on the road and calling at different villages, The three men got out of the.back of the ear and went into different fhops and afterwards the shopkeepers discovered the spurious notes. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, refused bail. As the result of* a further arrest, Harry Torpy, aged .40, a showman, will be charged. A fifth man has been detained for questioning. Over 60 spurious notes ,are known, to be circulated, and some are still being notified to the authorities. In most cases’ they .were changed jn shppfs the attendants were elderly or appeared likely to have poor sight.
