ENTERTAINMENTS

EVERYBODY’S, TO-NIGHT. “THE LIGHT OF WESTERN STARS.”

The all-talking adaptation of “The Light of Western Stars,” Zane Grey’s famous outdoor romance, will be screened at Everybody’s Theatre, New Plymouth, to-night. Zane Grey’s novels arc popular the world over, so patrons are assured that the “Light of Western Stars” will be no less popular in film form. Richard Arlen docs some real acting in the great Western story. As the well-known Zane Grey character, Dick Baily, Arlen is a cowhand foreman who fights and shoots and rides, and eyen quits drinking for the girl he loves. “The Light of Western Stars” gives Arlen a swaggering, bragging role such as the one in which he. made a, nation-wide hit in “The Virginian.” This Zane Grey story is the second of the talking out-door ■ dramas which Paramount initiated with “The Virginian.” Mary Brian heads a splendid supporting cast, including Harry Green and Fred Kohler. Showing in support will be Australian Movietone News, “The Artists' Reverie” (novelty), “The. Rube” (short act), “In the Good Old Summertime” (bouncing-ball song cartoon) and “Desperate Sam” (all-talking’comedy). -

THE REGENT TO-NIGHT. . ’DOUBLE-STAR BILL. “Second Choice” and “Is Everybody Happy?”, two Splendid all-talking attractions, will both be presented on the new programme commencing at the Regent, New Plymouth,: to-night. Dolores Costello, as’ the star of “Second Choice,” the Warner Bros, and Vitaphone production, thinks at times that she is falling in love with her strangely-won husband but her momentary tenderness is overcome by fond remembrances of the man; who jilted her—and she feels that she cannot longer remain under the- same roof with her wedded mate. This tangled state of .affairs is the direct, result, of a too-hasty marriage, contracted when both parties were in a State of. resentment over the fact'that'' each had been thrown, over. Chester Morris and Jack Mulhall appear at the head of.the supporting cast, Ted Lewis is a bit in his first Vitaphone production “Is Everybody Happy ?” He comes to the screen equipped with a background of several years of successfully enter' taining a large public that demanded his type of entertainment. Ted always worked hard to give a vaudeville audience the best in the way of musical diversion, and he docs the same in this new screen production. There is nobody on stage or screen who can put so much pep iiito a performance as Ted Levvis can, and does. Assisted by his excellent jazz band and the dancing star, Ann Pennington, you can be sure of a lively evening. Of course, the picture is not all fun and jazz. There are some momments of pathos and some sentimental ones as well. A Movietone News will open the programme.
