WHANGAMOMONA NEWS

FARAIERS’ UNION BRANCH MEETS. The annual meeting of the Whangamomona branch of the Farmers’ Union was held at Whangamomona on Friday afternoon, Air. D. Profit presiding over a small attendance. Correspondence was read concerning a proposal to link up Taranaki and the Main Trunk by road via the Wanganui River, Raetihi and Whangamomona. The president said the scheme had been discussed elsewhere in the province and other bodies were not in favour. It was decided to take no action. The president, reporting on his visits to provincial meetings, said that matters were discussed at such meetings and subsequently again dealt with by the North Taranaki executive. He considered that when a remit 'had been once rejected it should not be revived at New Plymouth. Remits should be discussed at Stratford as well as New Plymouth so that members who were unable to attend at New Plymouth could have an opportunity of stating their view; at Stratford.

Considerable discussion took place over the method of paying subscriptions. Although the subscriptions were due on April 1 they were not collected until November 20 and this interfered with the preparation of the balance-sheet. Air. Stockwell said the present state of affairs was very unsatisfactory. All funds should come through the local secretary. If a balance-sheet was to be sent in by the end of April it was up to the union to send in a list of refunds due.

The secretary said the membership was nominally 42, but there were 16 members about whose financial standing he knew nothing. It was decided that the secretary write to the North Taranaki executive for a, complete list of members.

When the president moved the adoption of the balance-sheet Air. McCutchan claimed, it should be audited. A long discussion followed and after the presi-

dent had drawn attention to the small amount involved it was adopted provisionally 1 . : • ’ The president was voted the sum of three guineas for his services. The president commented on the lack of interest displayed in the branch. Every endeavour had been made during the past year to facilitate members attending meetings but the result had not been encouragingThe election of officers resulted: President, Mr. L.
