HAWERA GOLF CLUB MEETS

COURSE FREEHOLD ACQUIRED

OFFICERS FOR YEAR ELECTED

Reporting to the annual meeting of the Hawera Golf Club last night the president, Mr. W. O’Callaghan, stated that last season had seen the most important event in the club’s history. This was the acquisition in June of the freehold of the links. A substantial deposit had been paid, leaving the balance on a reducing mortgage. The committee felt that no difficulty should be experienced in carrying out the terms of the purchase but was of opinion that it would not be possible to effect extensive improvements out of revenue. It would be necessary to look to members for assistance.

After allowing for depreciation and preliminary expenses in the acquisition of the freehold the statement of« accounts shows a credit balance of £246 Os 7d.

Donations were acknowledged from Messrs S. C. Tonks, R. N. Morpeth, J. N. Anderson, F. W. Sutton and two ananymous donors. The winners of club championships were:—Senior, W. O’Callaghan; intermediate, F. Champion; junior, J. A. Dalgetty; limit, W. O. Williams. The annual tournament had been most successful. G. M. Chong, New .Plymouth, had won the major event and other trophies had gone to visiting players. The North v. South match had been played at Fairfield. The course had 'been in excellent order during the summer. The summer cup after a keen contest had been won by M. R. Jones. The thanks of the club were due to Mr. W. R. McLean for allowing members to use his property, to Mr. George McLean for keeping the paddock grazed, and to Mr. S. C. Tonks for the valuable work he had done in connection with the farming operations. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. S. C. Tonks; vice-president, Mr. R. C. Hay-Mackenzie; captain, Mr. W. O’Callaghan; auditor, Mr. T. F. McKenzie ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. L. J. Bull; committee, Messrs F. W. 'Sutton, G. M. Page, J. N. Anderson, W. O. Williams and T. Morpeth.

It was decided to write a letter of thanks to Mr. L. H. Little for his work for the club.

The committee were recommended to procure shelters for erection at various places on the course. Another recommendation was that clubs go into the question of treeplanting. Votes of thanks were accorded outgoing officers, Mr. Bull, the Press and tlie farm committee. SOUTH TARANAKI BOWLING. PARK RINKS DEFEAT MANAIA. Five rinks < from the Park Bowling Club (Hawera) defeated the Manaia Bowling Club’s representatives on Wednesday by 17 points. The following are the details:— P. M.

The holders of the Cann Cup, Riley, McLaren (sub.), Adams and Colman, of the Park (Hawera) Bowling Club, were ’ defeated by a rink from the Hawera club on Wednesday afternoon by 22 points to 15. The winning rink was Champion, Canning, Townsley and Corkill. The Hawera rink led at the beginning, but at the 161 th head the game had evened up. From then on the challengers went ahead. LEGION’S SECOND DANCE. EARTHQUAKE FUND TO BENEFIT. The Hawera troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen conducted its second dance . in aid of the earthquake relief fund in St. Joseph’s Hall on Wednesday night. There was a large attendance of dancers, couples coming from places as distant as Stratford, and the venture must be regarded as wholly successful. The spirit in which the men of the Legion undertook the duties involved in the conduct of such a dance deserves the highest commendation, no effort being spared to make the evening a successful one. Townspeople lent their ready co-operation, and a sit-down supper was provided from their contributions. Wills’ Orchestra gave its service's in aid of the cause, while the Legion is equally indebted to the generosity of Monsignor Cullen in placing the hall at its disposal. The committee in charge of affairs comprised Lieutenant A. E. Stevens, Sergeants Johns and Mather, Troopers Briggs, Waite, Rose and Heaven. The ladies who assisted were Mrs. Waldron, Misses Evans, Ogden and Barleyman. The masters of ceremonies were Troopers Briggs and Waite. BANK MANAGER TO RETIRE. MR. A. E. RAWSON, OF HAWERA. Mr. A. E. Rawson, at present manager of the Bank of Australasia at Hawera, is due to retire on superannuation at the end of the present month. He will be succeeded by Mr. O. K. Tennent, who for the past six years has .been subinspector resident in Wellington. Joining the bank’s Master ton branch in 1888, Mr. Rawson has seen 42 years of service both in New Zealand and Western Australia. For the last 11 years he has been the branch manager at Hawera. He has occupied various positions in many parts of New Zealand, and was resident in Western Australia for 11 years. Mr. and Mrs. Rawson and their two younger children will move to New Plymouth at the end of the month. GRAND THEATRE -TALKIES.

Acclaimed one of the most highly effective productions of its type ever screened here, “Conspiracy,” Radio Pictures’ mystery-melodrama, pleased large audiences at its initial performances at the Grand Theatre yesterday, and will be shown finally to-night. Superb acting, a well-balanced cast, sensible direction, and an interesting plot sum up the entertainment value of “Conspiracy.” Bessie Love is seen in a new type of role, pleasingly different from the musical pictures in which she has appeared. Miss Love gives a performance which marks a high spot in her career. Also outstanding is the characterisation of Ned Sparks. Accustomed to playing light comedy roles, he gives a real., surprise by donning an outfit that would bring envious glances from Lon Chaney, and giving a performance that demands admiration and reanect.
