SCOTTISH FAREWELL

COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL HELD.

MR. AND MRS. PETRIE TO DEPART.

“On behalf of the . Taranaki Scottish Society, we the undersigned officers of the society, on the occasion of your departure for Scotland, the land of your birth, desire to express to you both the high esteem in which you are held by the members of the society for the splendid help that you have at all times rendered, both personally and by your generous financial assistance. We trust that your tour will be most enjoyable, and that you will both return to Stratford to enjoy many happy years amongst us.” -

Those are the words on an illuminated address presented at a Scottish social in the Parish Hall, Stratford, last night to. Mr. and Mrs. J. Petrie,’ who are leaving soon on a trip to Scotland. ' The popularity of the guests, not only in Stratford, but throughout the province, was shown by the large attendance representative of all parts of Taranaki.

When the loyal toast had been honoured the ,Rev. J. MacGregor proposed the “Home Land,” to which Mr. G. Littlejohn replied. Then “The Guests of the Evening” was proposed by Chief T. W. Smith, who said that ever since the Scottish Society was formed in 1912 Mr. and Mrs. Petrie had been' members, and. had never fluctuated in their allegiance to the society. They had not perhaps, sung songs or danced dances, but their assistance had been of a more material nature. Mr. Petrie started business in 1896, said Mr. W. L. Kennedy, who had found the guests to be the staunchest of friends whose friendship had been anything but of a volatile character.- Mr. and Mrs; Petrie had played a prominent part in public life and in supporting the society in its activities.

Messrs. G. Smart and P. Thomson spoke in similar vein.

Other toasts honoured were “The Borough of Stratford,” Mr. S. Macalister —Mr. P. Thomson; “Ladies’ Committee,’' Mr. C. Mol, Young—Mr, J. Jamieson. • Items were given by Miss Kent (Hawera) and Mr. W. J. Hall (Stratford), elocution; Mr. J. E. Campbell (Hawera), monologue; Mr. A. Walker (Stratford), violin solo;, Miss McCormack (Stratford), Mrs. Sunderland (Hawera), Messrs. P., T. Aitken and J.
