SWIMMING IN HAWERA

LOCAL CLUB’S SUCCESS PROGRESS IN COMPETITIONS. .p: ’’ ! PROSPECTS FOR NEXT CARNIVAL. '(By "Life-saver.”) An increase in entries and much enthusiasm have marked the Hawera Swimming Club’s competitions, which are now well under way. Good progress has been made with the various events at the club nights held twice every week, and an interesting stage has been reached.

The holders of the various cups are:— Senior cup, A. Ryan; junior cup, I. Jobson- novice cup, K. Barron; Moss-Mait-land cup, Aliss Jessie Olliver; Higgs cup (junior girls); P. Murray; Spragg cup (junior boys), K. McGlashan. The V. Spragg cup was not competed for last Points in the senior cup at present are: I. Jobson 7, S. Anderson 5, A; Dowdle 3, A. Spragg 3. The competition so far has been very keen, with good races in the 50 yards, 75 yards and 100 yards, the events finalised to date. The 220 yards, 300 yards and 440 yards races have yet to be swum. , I. Jobson, who is in the lead, should find the remaining distances to his liking. With placings in one or two of the races, his points should not be miich less than the winner’s. S. Anderson, second so far, has prooably seen the distances most suited to him swum. There is no reason, however, why he should not gather a few points in the remaining races. A. Dowdle and A. Spragg will have to be placed in all the other races to be close up at the finish. Both swimmers have proved that they can do the distances in fair style and may be reckoned on at the finish. Bert Ryan won the cup last season, and the one before, but so far he has not been able to get a place. He will be very hard to* .beat, however, in the longer distances, which suit him much the best. NOVICE POINTS WELL SPREAD.

The points in the novice cup are better distributed, than they were last season. Al. R. Nelson leads with 5, closely followed by G. McGlashan 4. E. Gibson 2 and S. AlcMillan 1 are also in the running. ~. „ .. Nelson will not have things all his own way, and will need to show his best form to win. McGlashan will have to be reckoned with, while Gibson and McAlillan have only to share the honours in the last two races to be among the leaders. The junior cup distances are 50 yards, 75 yards and 100, all to be.swum twice. Two 50 yard® races have been swum, J. Olliver having 5 points, R. Clarke 4 and K. McGlashan 4. These three swimmers are all performing well, and when the final tallying is made there will not be much between them. In the remaining distances R. Clarke should show to advantage, though, with their handicaps, the other two may be hard to keep out. The ladies fighting out the Aloss-Alait-land cup event are: Aliss Z. Spragg 5, Aliss P. Alurray 3, Miss N. Duckworth 3, Aliss V. Ryan 1, and Aliss J. Murray 1. The 25 yards and 50 yards races have been swum, leaving only the 75 yards race. . Should Miss Spragg get first or second in the 75 yards, the cup is hers. If, however, she is unplaced, and either Afisses P. Alurray or Duckworth win, the successful one will be the holder. Misses V. Ryan and J. Alurray, though they cannot do better than runner-up, may prove stumbling-blocks. A VERY EVEN COMPETITION. No competition is as even as that for the V. Spragg cup, in which the points are: D. Gilmore 4, T. Cann 4, E. Kelsen 4, G. AlcCallum 4, B. Smith 2. The distances already swum are: 25 yards (twice), 50 yards and 50 yards breaststroke. The swimmer who wins' will have to produce her best in the remaining races. As the races are all handicaps, it is hard to forecast the winner, and all fivb competitors have every chance. The club’s next carnival will be on the evening of March 9, and promises to be an unusually interesting event. Coming so soon after the New Zealand championships, it is hoped that highclass swimmers from other parts of New Zealand will compete. The centre’s action in allotting the 880 yards’ championship to this carnival has been much appreciated by the club. Alembers are keen to see the club’s champion, Bert Ryan, meet St, George in what promises to be a thrilling contest. Jobson, too, is another Hawera competitor who may cause trouble. During the evening Spence Anderson will attempt to break his own 50 yards Taranaki record. A specially arranged race will probably be put on the programme, perhaps a selected heat of one of the regular races. Then it is hoped to arrange a special relay race between Wanganui and Taranaki teams. If this event comes off it should prove one of the high lights of the carnival.

The interest taken by Aliss S. Seaver, a former Taranaki champion, but now confined to hospital, has been much appreciated by club officials. Her congratulations on the club’s success at the Taranaki championships were received at the last committee meeting.
