THURSDAY CRICKET

AN INTERESTING POSITION INGLEWOOD’S LEAD REDUCED. DEFEAT BY WAITARA ELEVEN.'

By ecoring a two-point win againet Inglewood in the opening match of the fifth and final round of the Thursday competition, Waitara has now reduced the margin between itself and Inglewood to one point. The issue therefore promises to be in doubt until each team meets Eltham. Should - Waitara gain a three-point win over the southern team next Thursday, and Inglewood, secure only a two-pointer at Eltham the next week, Waitara and Inglewood will need to play off. Inglewood opened first but made an unpromising start, losing five good wickets for 23. D. Allen stemmed the rot, and with G. Barry raised the score ito seven for 54. L. Sutherland joined Barry, and before the latter was caught and. bowled, by Whitmore for 29, which included two boundaries, the total stood at 83. The last two men did not last long, and the innings closed at 86. L. Sutherland carried his bat for an invaluable 23, which included three boundaries. The Waitara fielding was very smart, every chance being accepted. Priar and Dunlop effected some splendid catches.

Thanks chiefly to J. Priar. who went in first wicket down at 13 and carried his bat throughout for 57, Waitara made 108. Priar, whose score included seven boundaries and. a six, was severe on anything loose, scoring freely to leg behind the wicket. He gave no chance until he reached 35, but thereafter had a charmed life, being missed several times, mostly near the boundary. No other batsman made double figures. Hunt, who took the gloves half-way through the innings, shaped well, catching Chadwick smartly and allowing only one extra. Kingston was just getting set nicely when Hamerton held him brilliantly at point. With an hour and twenty minutes to play Inglewood put on 117 for three wickets. D. Parkin, who batted prettily for 54 not out, and D. Allen spoilt Waitara’s chances of securing a three-point-er, and thus evening up the points. Kingstone was in good form behind the sticks. Detailed scores are:— WAITARA.
