Additional machine-guns are being fitted to the leading edges of the wings to increase the fighting power of aeroplanes which can be employed to intercept enemy raids. The newest is the SSI9, which has been successfully tested by the Gloster Aircraft Company at Martlesham. It has six machine-guns capable of converging fire on the target? Four guns are mounted on the wings and one on each side of the fuselage. The plane is equipped with a 480 h.p. Bristol Jupiter engine, super-charged for altitude. A speed of 194 miles an hour can be achieved.

With a full military load the machine climbed 15,000 feet in nine minutes. The greatest efficiency was attained at 16,000 feet, but 176 miles an hour was reached at 26,100 feet, the pilot being equipped, with oxygen breathing apparatus. The plane dives without vibration at 320 miles an hour. The .pilot can operate all six guns simultaneously.
