. SPORTS CLUB-UT RECESS. (From Our Own Correspondent). ' The Uriiti-Sports Club held, its annurf meeting in the hall on February 12. Mr. ! W. L. Larsen being/ absent, Mr. Rex j ? Larsen was chairman. j. The balance-sheet showed that th# <! year had. begun with a credit of £9 i r lid and closed with a credit of £U 1® ,• 3d. The loss on the previous year s ball i; had been somewhat relieved by a profit of £2 8s 4d pn two euchre parties. In spite of extra expenditure on new; dummies, a further supply of . and extra advertising, the sports meeting was still able to clear itself. There* ceipts from the nail-driving, sheep* guessing and donations were all less than those of. the previous year, the donations having decreased by £7. In® balance-sheet was passed. . Discussion on the question of holding the sports meeting this year was adjourned till last Tuesday, when the at* tendance was disappointing. Mr. • brother was voted to the chair and Mr. Rex Larsen moved that owing to lack of community interest and the present financial depression this year’s sports, meeting be abandoned and all consideration of holding a further meeting be postponed for 12 months. This was carried unanimously. It was decided that several small accounts be paid and the bank account closed, and the bal* • ance be transferred to the Post Office? Saving Bank. Messrs. J. Bell and J. Millar were appointed trustees. Mr. J. Bell’s kind offer to provide the necessary iron covering for the dummies was accepted. An honorarium of £1 Is each was voted to the joint.secretaries, Messrs. R Larsen and J. Millar,
GENERAL. Prizes were awarded to Esme Short and Colin Bell by Missioner Bennett at the Sunday school recently for the highest attendance throughout the past year. Mrs. A, R. Alpe is visiting Opunaka as the guest of her daughter, Mrs. W. Resima, Miss Ruth Rea, New Plymouth, is visiting relatives in the district. Mr. W. Resima is again in the district for an indefinite period. The long anticipated break in the weather has at last arrived. A strong north wind preceded short showers. Dipping has been in full swing for the past week and many large flocks have already been put through. The grader has been doing excellent work on the unmetalled roads about the district. Manyjough parts of the roads, which were once almost impassable to motor traffic, can be now negotiated with ease.
The district has sustained a sad loss in the death of Mr. Tom Smith, which occurred during the past week, Mr. Smith was a member of one of the oldest and most respected families in the district and had endeared himself to all by his remarkable optimism and cheery smile. Among the large number of friends present at his graveside were prominent many returned soldiers, who had gathered there to pay their last tributes to a staunch comrade..
