A CLEVER DODGE
CHINESE WITHOUT PERMIT. SUBSTITUTION OF PHOTOGRAPH “The substitution in this case of a photograph on a passport is a new and clever dodge,” said Mr. Mclntosh, representing the Customs Department, in the Police Court at Auckland, when a Chinese gardener, ong Tong (Mr. Adams), was charged with entering New Zealand without a permit.
Mr. Mclntosh said accused arrived at Wellington last November, when he presented a passport for returning to New Zealand. It had later been found that the original photograph had been replaced with that of accused. Accused had been found by -‘ the police working in gardens at Avondale. Mr. Adams said accused could not read or sign his name. He had paid £5O for the certificate to a tourist company in Hongkong. The magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward, said there was evidence of fraud ’about the affair. Accused would be convicted and his deportation ordered. Bail would be allowed in two sureties of £2OO.
