A NOTED VISITOR
COLONEL DE BRETON.
LINK WITH EARLY AUCKLAND. ’ A noted visitor accompanying Lord Baden-Powell. .oA. hie tour.of New Zealand is Lieutenant-Colonel E. P. Le Breton, a retired British Army officer, who will act as touring commissioner for the Chief Scout. Prior to 1914 Lieutenant-Colonel Le Breton served on th> North-West and North-East frontiers of India, and during, the Great War he saw active service in Arabia and Mesopotamia, first commanding a company of the First, King George’s Own, Sappers and Miners, and subsequently as a general staff officer and commanding officer of Royal Engineers in the 17th Indian Division.
Licuten; t-Colonel Le Breton has an interesting association with Auckland, as his father, the late LieutenantColonel H. Le Breton, came to. New Zealand in the late sixties as a junior officer in the 18th Royal Irish Regiment. Ensign Le Breton -was s' tioned in Auckland and remained with his regiment for three years before returning to England about 1870. He was an accomplished artist, and several sketches of early Auckland, signed “Ensign Le Breton,” are in ths family’s possession.
