A GESTURE OF FRIENDSHIP
FILLIP TO AUSTRALIAN TRADE . BRITISH HOUSE SYMPATHETIC. By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. London, Feb. 19. A plea for the use of Australian hardwood sleepers in China was heard on the China Indemnity Application Bill in the House of Commons. Mr. Leslie Boyce moved an amendment for the purpose of widening the objects tb which the £4,000,000 might be applied by the board of trustees. The China Bill provided that the money should be epent on the purchase of railway material in the United Kingdom. _ Mr. Boyce said never before in the history of the Commonwealth had she been in such need of orders from overseas. If the Government accepted, the amendment all interested in the welfare of Australia and this promising trade would be extremely grateful. Mr. P. J. H. Hannon, seconding the amendment, said it would be a gestuie of genuine friendship to Australia if it were accepted. Dr. Hugh Dalton, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, replied that the Government would be very glad to do wli£Lt it could both for Australia and other Dominions interested in the China trade. The amendment was agreed to.
