TOKO DISTRICT NEWS.
The Toko branch of the Women’s Division held its first meeting for the year on Thursday. After the meeting a large case of clothing was packed and sent to Stratford for distribution among the earthquake refugees. Among those present were Mesdames Maunsell (president), Murray, Maxwell, Simmons, Grierson, Hobbs (Douglas), Burgham, Len Milne, Kilsby, Jones, Andgrson and. Major, and Misses Maunsell, Leo and Milne.
Mrs. Livick and Miss Theo Brayton, Napier, and Mrs. Hurfit, Auckland; are the guests of Mrs. H. Milne, Toko. Mrs. A. Dagg, who has been visiting Napier and Masterton, is expected home on Tuesday.
A memorial service to the late Mrs. Corbett, formerly a resident of Toko, was held in the Toko church on Sunday. The Rev. J. McGregor conducted the service, which was largely attended.
A largely-attended meeting of settlers of the district was held under the auspices of the Farmers’ Union in the hall on Saturday night to discuss organisation for the earthquake relief fund. A strong general committee with Mr. J. B. Hine as chairman and Mr. T. T. Murray as secretary was established and canvassers appointed were the president, secretary and Messrs. A. Marfell, Evan Jones, W. H. Were and G. Were. The meeting agreed that a direct form of donation was to be preferred, and the canvassers will be expected to cover the Toko district as enclosed in boundaries extending from Sangster’s Hill on the west, Huinga on the south, the Waiwiri Saddle on the north and Crown Road on the east.
