MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT

STRATFORD COUNCIL MEETING.

MONTHLY REPORTS OF OFFICERS.

The Stratford Borough Council met last night, those present being the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, and Messrs. R. F. Harkness, C. Moore, A. Nelson, R. R. Tyrer, A, H. Trotter, D. J. Maloue and N. B. Fletcher.

During the month maintenance work had been done and. metalled roads and footpaths had received attention, reported the borough foreman, Mr. L. B. Davis. The corner of Regan Street and Swansea Road and the corner of Regan Street and Orlando Street had been remetalled and 'grouted with bitumen. Miranda Street had been top-dressed with bitumen and qhips from Fenton Street to Regan Street. A good deal of banking had been done on Regau Street east. Two house water services had been laid and the usual maintenance work done. Mains had been inspected and repairs effected with as little delay as possible. Good progress had been made with the new drainage work. Broadway south and part of Romeo Street had been completed. Work was proceeding in Romeo Street and Hamlet Street south. Should the weather be at all favourable the whdle of the mains should be laid in about four weeks. Under . relief works kerbing and channelling had been completed as far as funds would permit. Work was proceeding on formation in Miranda Street where 11 men were - employed. That work would take about a week to complete. The bulk supply had been, very satisfactory during the month, no. interruptions of any description having occurred, while the voltage had been well maintained, reported tile electrical engineer, Mr. A. E. Moss. Units purchased showed an increase over January of 1930, the figures being 144,600 as against 128,000. The peak load reached in December was again reached on January 30 but had not been exceeded and waa 360 k.v.a. . One old residence had been wired and connected and. eight new points connected. The new 200 k.v.a. transformer for the central ring area of low tension had arrived, been dried out and erected in Juliet Street. It was brought Into use of January 30 and was running satisfactorily in conjunction with the Miranda sub. There should be ample margin now for many years’ increase of central loading. The 100 k.v.a. had been shifted to the southern sub. near the hospital and would be erected during February. Stock slaughtered at the abattoirs, reported the manager, Mr. R. Jenkin, had been 107 cows, 43 heifers, 6 oxen, 3 calves, 476 sheep, 95 lambs and 64 pigs. Slaughtering fees had amounted to £95 5s 6d. The librarian, Mr. A. S. Martin, reported that the number of books issued was. 2096, returned 2:112, new books added 33, new subscribers 10, total subscribers 224. Subscriptions received amounted to £lB 10s. . The band, reported the bandmaster Mr. M. McCaskill, was working hard in view of the contest to be held in Hawera next month. It was having six practices a week, three rehearsals and three marcliing. The attendance was "ood but previously was small owing to school holidays and the boys being away from Stratford. The band was making fair progress and was ready to give further recitals. The foremap reported the cost 01 forming, remetalling and bitumen-surfac-ing Pembroke Road from Broadway to Cordelia Street had been £358. The estimate had been £287, but no allowance had been made in that for the cost of filling the dip in the road. The Mayor and Mr. J. C. Robins were re-elected borough representatives on the east committee of the Egmont National Park Board.
