DR. MOONJE SENDS ADVICE
British Wireless. Rugby, Feb. 15. Pending the result of Gandhi’s conference with the Viceroy, trouble continues in Benares, where British troops were in occupation of the main streets all day yesterday. Students who attempted to obstruct the. police at Durkakund were dispersed by a baton charge. The casualties as a result of the Hindu-Moslem fights yesterday consisted of three killed and 51 injured. In Jambuscar, a town in the Broach district (Bombay Presidency), rioters killed ojie and injured two Government employees who were guarding crops.
Dr. Moonje, representative at the Indian conference of the Mahasabha Party, referring to the conclusions of the conference in a statement to The Times, said he thought Gandhi and the Congress leaders would be wise to accept the invitation of the Prime Minister and the Viceroy for further discussion and negotiation. He had cabled this advice to his friends in India.
With regard to the conditions reiterated by Gandhi, such as the abolition of the salt tax arid the prohibition of foreign liquor, they were of a kind which criuld be. dealt with by the legislature after the revised constitution had been established. They were Sot essential to the working out of the constitution and consequently they should present no insuperable difficulties at this stags. Earnest, sincere and honest attempts must be made for the present truce to grow into actual peace.
