! REPORT ON YEAR’S ACTIVITY.

LARGE INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP

The annual report of the New Plymouth Golf Club, to be presented to the annual meeting on Monday, states: The membership of the club at the end of. the year was' as follows (the previous year’s figures given in parentheses): Full playing members, men 99 (103), ladies 61 (72); country, mid-week, beginners, men and boys, 80 (49j; supernumerary, junior members, etc., ladies and girls, 103 (69). Ah the result of the recommendations made at the t anqual meeting, ■ the amounts and terms of payment of the subscriptions of new members, and also terms of payment o. the subscriptions of ordinary members, were made easier. The committee is satisfied that .the alterations were suecessf ul. ' The revenue of the club has been maintained, and. a considerable increase of new members was shown. The profit carried forward, £3B 18s Id, has been arrived at after charging agamst revenue depreciation amounting to £l3O, and the cost of fencing and casual labour on new greens. The club has reached a stage where it is essential that revenue be maintained and a. policy of gradual debt reduction instituted. ° Inter-club matches were a very enjoyable feature of the year’s activities. Teams visited the Inglewood, Stratford, Opunake and Eltham Clubs, and visits were received from Inglewood, Waitaia, Stratford, .Opunake, Eltham# Hawera and Scafield Clubs. An unsuccessful attempt was made to recover the Sea field Cup from thij, Eltham Club. The course was in very good order throughout the year, although the developing and maintaining of the new greens entailed a great deal of extra work. In this connection the thanks of the club are dtje to Mr. F. S. Johns, the chairman of the greens committee, whose enthusiasm, energy and ability are an invaluable asset to the club. Great credit is also due to Messrs Sanders and Jeffries, the club’e grotiudsmen, who throughout the year gave loyal and most efficient service. *The club tenders its thanks to the Press for the assistance and publicity afforded its activities. The usual club matches were played, aud the chief results were:—Men: Senior championship, A. E. Conway; run-ner-up, C. H. Stephenson; intermediate championship, A. Thorne; runner-up, C.

R. Corfe; junior championship, D. H. Budd; runner-up, R. Renner; limit championship, J. D. McLean; runner-up, C H. Strom bom; Standish Cup, J. L. Mander; Medley Cup, A. E. Conway; Coltman Cup, G. H. Haughton; C. H. Weston Trophy, -C. R. Corfe and C. H. Waterston. Ladies: Senior championship, Mips Dell; runner-up, Mrs. Russell; junior championship, Mrs. Stainton; runner r up, Mrs. W. C. Weston; Blackley Cup, Miss Wilson; Mac Diarmid Cup, Mrs. Russell. The scheme of course alterations was completed during the year, and towards the end of the year the new course was opened for pjay. The work has been very well carried out, and the results are most gratifying. The twenty-fifth Easter tournament was very successful, due in great measure to the excellent work of the tournament secretaries, Messrs W. B. Russell and S. F. Russell. The championship was won by Mr. Leo Quip, of. the Bltham Club, and Mr. G. M. Chong was runner up. The annual ladies tournament was held and was also very successful. Mrs. Broderick (Wanganui)

won the championship, and Mrs. Collinson (Palmerston North) was runner-up. The North Taranaki v. South Taranaki match was played at Hawera last year and was won by South Taranaki after an excellent contest. The income and expenditure account for the year shows a net- profit of £33 18s Id. The main items of expenditure were: Wages £535 6s Bd, rent and rates £467 10s,. interest £319 Bs, manures, seeds and green maintenance £122 16s lid, depreciation £l3O, tractor runnin» expenses £67. Oh the credit side subscriptions totalled £1047 Is 6d, rents received £425, tractor levy £fs3 las, green fees £lOO 14s lOd, entrance fees £lll 16s 6d, profit Easter tourney £3l Us Sd, locker rents £2B ss, hod sundry receipts £7 19s 63, a total of £1906 4s. Mr. V. Elliott has been appointed auditor of the club. . ■
