ASSOCIATION’S STRONG The impression among some people that the Returned Soldiers’ Association in New Zealand, if not waning in is dormant condition, is strongly discountenanced by an examination of the latest financial membership ladder. A circular from Dominion headquarters showing the position at December 31, 1930, was .tabled at the meeting of the South Taranaki Association at Hawera, on Anday nign . Financial membership only is recorded, and at December 31 the total for New Zealand .was 8834. As there were yet three months to go before the end of the financial year it was confidently expected that the membership for 193031 P would well exceed 10,000. would be a big increase over HK9-30 figures, it was stated, the grand total at March 31 last was 9221. Membership was very low a. t Mai ch. 31 1927, when only 6761 financial members were recorded. Two years later the total stood ftt 7983. About 40 associations are now affiliated and practically all have’ shown, increases in membership recently. The South Taranaki Association was twelfth on the ladder' at December pl, showing 129 paid-up members. This total is expected to reach a considerably larger figure by the end of the financial year. A further definite statement that no further refugees would be sent to Hawera unless it was sure that they were going to stay with friends was made by Mr. Graham. ... “However, we do not wish these visitors to think they are. unwelcome,’ said Mr. Pacey. The Relief Committee would do ail it could to help them. MOKOIA NEWS. The school has commenced another year’s work with approximately the same number of children on the roll. The committee held a euchre party and dance recently to obtain prize money for the annual picnic but the children, in common with many others decided to deny themselves the pleasure of prizes and pass the money on to the earthquake relief fund. The picnic was held at tho Patea beach on Friday, when to some extent the cold and changeable weather marred the day’s outing. After a swim and lunch the party returned to the domain, where lollie scrambles, racing for chocolatb bars, and afternoon tea filled in the remainder of the day. Donations of lollies were made by All s. A. L. Alain, and chocolate bars by Alls. Holdem. Mr. AV. J. Marsh very kindly transported the children to and fiom Patea*
