TARANAKI RACE MEETING BETS AND STAKES DUTY EXEMPT. £2587 FROM THIS SOURCE ALONE. The actual amount that the earthquake relief fund will benefit as the re- . suit of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s race meeting at New Plymouth on Thursday and Saturday of last week will not definitely be known until the balancesheet *of the meeting is made up in tjic next day or two. The fund will definitely benefit, however, to begin with, to the extent of £2587 135., which is the amount of totalisator duty, dividend duty and stakes duty that the Government has allowed the club to remit direct to the relief fund. In addition, there will be the amusement tax. The totalisator staff and the gate staff engaged at the recent meeting also made a contribution to the fqnd which will probably be acknowledged separately. Any profit from the meeting will be donated to the relief fund, but Should there be a loss it will be borne by the club. BAND AND VOCAL CONCERT. RELIEF FUND COLLECTION. A fin« vocal and instrumental programme was given in Pukekura Park last evening by the New Plymouth Citizens’ Band and several weil-known' artists. A collection was taken for the benefit of the earthquake relief fund. A large number of people attended the concert, and the items met with general acclamation.' The programme was:—Hymn, “It is Well”; march, “Viva Pattie”; selection, “Gounod’s Faust”; songs, “The Holy ,City” and “Love’s Old Sweet Song,” Mr. Dally; violin soli, “Londonderry Airs” and "When You Come to Find the End of the Day,” Mr. E. Neilson; fantasia, “The Smithy in the Wood”; songs, “Sing, Sing, • Birds on the Wing” and “Orange Blossoms,” Mr. F. Clfilaiid; songs, “What is, is Best” and “A Cottage in God’s Garden,” Misss B. Coleman.; songs, “Nervona” and “For You Alone.” Mr. F. Baird; march, BB and CF; hymn; “Eternal Father.” The band was. conducted by Mr. E. Lowe. FRETHEY’S GARDENS PICNIC. £l3 FOR EARTHQUAKE RELIEF. There was a large attendance at Mr. J. Frethey’s gardens. New Plymouth, yesterday, when the gate proceeds were devoted to the earthquake relief fund. The perfect weather added to the splendour of the flov/ers and the native biisb. The Regimental Band, under the conductorship of Lieut. F, W. G. McLeod, and the New Plymouth Pipe Bapd, under Drum-Major Williamson, rendered an appropriate programme. The gate takings amounted to over £lO. The Indies in charge of the Roojcery Nook tea rooms in the gardens generously donated the n/; takings, amounting to £3. Mr. Butler supplied ice cream free, and Mr. Stokoe did the advertising at- a reduced rate. The Frankleigh Park hall committee held a successful dance bn Saturday night in aid of the relief furtds. ,
