EARTHQUAKE REFUGEES
HUNDRED IN NEW PLYMOUTH ALL PLACED WITH THEIR FRIENDS. HIGH SCHOOLS TAKING PUPILS, No information that an official party of earthquake refugees was to be sent from Palmerston North to New Plymouth had been received by the Mayor when inquiries were made by a reporter last night. Mr. Griffiths explained, however, that about 100 refugees had como through privately and were now staying with friends. Six arrived by train on Saturday evening. In connection with the, offer of the New Plymouth High Schools Board to accommodate pupils from the devastated parts of Hawke’s Bay, two boarders have already arrived at the boys’ school and four more are due to-night. The Education Department has also sent two boarders to the girls’ school and is considering whether others will be sent. Three girls from Hawke’s Bay who are staying with relatives are attending the girls’ school as day pupils. A boy, who came to New Plymouth from the earthquake area with his parents on Wednesday, has been enrolled at the Boys’ High School in order that he may continue his engineering -.course.
