ASCENT OF MT. EGMONT

PARTY FROM NORTH HOUSE. CLOUDS OBSCURE THE VIEW. What is probably a record number for any one party to make a successful ascent of Mount Egmont from the north side was one of 42 members of the Taranaki Alpine Club which climbed to the summit yesterday under the leadership of Guide R. W. Larsen. The party left New Plymouth about 7 o’clock and were conveyed by several cars and a'motor-lorry to the old mountain house. At 9 o’clock the ascent of the mountain commenced. Conditions were good for climbing, but owing to the large number making the trip it was necessary to go at a steady pace. Although some of the members showed signs; of the strenuous climb none found it impossible to complete the trip. After the party arrived above Humphries’ Castle a thick mist obscured the mountain. It was hoped that the mist would lift before the top was reached but unfortunately this did not eventuate, so the alpinists did not obtain the view they expected. After an interval spent on the top during which lunch was eaten, the party commenced the downward trail; Good time was made on the descent, glissading being indulged a considerable distance, and the party arrived, back at the old house about 4.30 p.m. After hot water shower baths and afternoon tea the party returned to New Plymouth about 6.30 pirn. The last outing for the season will be held on. March 1, when a picnic has been arranged to take place at White Cliffs. ' ,
