GAS ENGINEERS CONFER

DOMINION INSTITUTE. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The Gap Institute of New Zealand commenced its seventh annual in the Totvn Hall buildings, Dunedin, this morning. The eflair was occupied by the president, Mr. A. Couper'(Dunedin) and there was an attendance of 45 members. The Mayor of Dunedin, Mr. R. S. Black, gaVe the delegatee a warm welcome to the city. The council of the institute in its report for the year ended January 31 stated that the membership now totalled 92 as compared with 86 for the previous year. The president referred to the saq disaster at Napier and the surrounding district, and it wap resolved to forward a telegram to the Mayor of Napier expressing sympathy. The president said that qqite a number of important matters had been dealt with. The committee set up at the last conference to deal with the coal question and other matters had met the Ministers concerned and. he felt sure hart been able to convince them of the justness of its complaints. Although he could not promise anythin* of a definite nature/owing to the financial, position of his department, the Minister of Railways had stated fiat due consideration would be given to all the pointe mentioned and he Would certainly do his best to remedy them if possible. As regards the interview with the Minister of Mines and the mine-owners members would realise that Mr. Belton dealt most fully with this matter and he felt sure that the Ministers and mine-owners '/IV realised the necessity of greater care being taken in the class and nature of the coal provided. Mr. Copper also gave a resume or the Dunedin gap department’s operations since its inception, and a number of views were shown of the works in progressive stages of their construction. Mr. W. A. Joiner. M.C., New Zealand Government Laboratory, read a paper ou “Oil from Coal.” The visitors were entertained at a social in the evening.
