UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE
accrediting problems.
TWO FURTHER DIFFICULTIES.
Wellington, Feb. 20.
In accordance with instructions given by tile University Senate, the exceptive committee of the Senate has issued the following statement: — In regard to the adoption of some form of accrediting for university entrance purposes, from time to time tic Senate, acting on the advice of the Academic Board and the Entrance Board, has approved the principle that in the ease of candidates for university entrance presented by secondary schools approved for the purpose, the univerpity would accept recommendations from the heads of these schools if sufficient safeguards were provided.
(hie of the most important of ’ these would be a guarantee from the Education Department that accredited candidates had undoubtedly reached the required- standard. The university recognises that in the financial circumstances the present time is not opportune for the State to incur any additional expense, and it consequently coiisiutfrs that further consiuera. - tion of the accrediting system should be deferred until the next annual meeting of the Senate. This postponement will enable further consideration to be given to two other difficulties involved in accrediting, entrance to professions such as law and medicine, and admission for our students to British universities. The executive committee understands that the Education Department is exploring the possibility of instituting a senior school certificate, possession of which m>t. in cases approved by the university, be considered equivalent to a pass in the university entrance examination.
