EARTHQUAKE INCIDENTS
CONIRIBUTION TO RELIEF.
The - Waitara Borough Council last night voted £5O to the earthquake re. The council of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association has voted £-oU to the fund. , , „ The subscription list opened by thq Mayor of Waitara (Mr. E. A. George)! now totals £399 Is. 2d. The Red Cross list amounts to £l5 Bs. 6d. The Waitara branch of the Red Cross Society has been applying the proceeds of the appeal for clothing to the relief of refugees from Hawke’s Bay who are in the Waitara . district, there being several. , , ~ The Oamaru fund now stands bm £3OOO. As the result of the earthquake a considerable number of people have been thrown out of employment, while in addition many other workmen m the Do, minion are seeking employment. Many of these men are qualified carpenters, builders and artisans. The Prime Minister states that preference of employment will be given those who have unfortunately been thrown out of work by the earthquake, and there is no likelihood of any labour shortage. Australian workmen are strongly , advised against making a trip to New Zealand with any expectation of securing employment in the damaged area. A London cable states that subscriptions to the earthquake relief fund include £lOOO from Lord and Lady Wakefield and £lOO from Sir Charles and Lady Fergusson. Two young Napier persons were married at the Presbyterian manse in Vigor Brown Street on Saturday night. They were George T. Harvey, second son of Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Harvey, of Ashley Gor»e, Canterbury, and Miss Dorothy Helen Flinn, eldest daughter of Mrs. B. A. Flinn, Shakespeare. Terrace. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. A. Gould. . The Mayor of Rotorua yesterday handed to a pilot of Rotorua Airways, Ltd, the sum of £2OO in cash for immediate distribution to sufferers in the earthquake area. The pilot on arriving at Hastings located the Mayor at a meeting-with the. Prime Minister, together with other members of the Cabinet. He handed the envelop© io the Mayor, who on opening it expressed delight at the action of the Rotorua people.
