NEW PLYMOUTH CARNIVAL

GREY CUP TO HAWERA H. ST- GEORGE MILE CHAMPION. FITZROY WINS OUT POLO MATCH. The Taranaki Mile swimming championship was won by H. . St. George (Fitzroy club) at a carnival held by the- New Plymouth Amateur Swimming Club at the New Plymouth Municipal baths on Saturday evening. The water Was 65 degrees F. There was a good attendance of spectators, and competitors from Opunake, Hawera, Stratford, Waitara, East End, and Fitzroy Clubs swam. The Grey Cup relay race was also contested and resulted in the Hawera team winning very decisively in the remarkably fast time of 71 2-5 seconds, an average of 17 4-5 seconds per man for each length. The Taranaki mile championship, won by H. St. George with B. Dudley second and R. Gardiner third, drew nine entries. Three, how ever, I, Jobson, Who was to swim for Hawera in the Grey Cup relay just afterwards, C. H. Plumtree, -who had an injured knee, and N.’Gardiner were Scratched. ThO starters were K. Staunton (F.), H. St. George (F.), W, Riminington (E.E.), R. Gardiner (E.E.), A. Ryan (H.) and B. Dudley (0.). Ryan responsible for most of .the pace-making and when he retired after 32 lengths had established a lead for St. George and himself of a lap with Dudley, swimming unpaced, in next place and R, Gardiner another length away. Staunton was fourth and Rimmington had retired earlier. St. George was in il good position, for by swimming with Gardiper he could hold his two lap? lead, while Dudley lost a probable advantage, by going alone. Staunton retired after 39 laps with cramp, signs of which had prevented him keeping with the leaders. Dudley dropped back some yards over the last quarter but St. George kept With Gardiner to finish strongly and little distressed by one and a quarter lengths. Gardiner, the only other to finish, was nearly a lap further back. SPEEDSTERS IN GREY CUP. ■Eight entries were received for the Grey Cup championship relay race for 4-men teams, each member to swim 33 1-3 yards, but the scratching of Opunake and East End B left a good field of six teams. The word “go” saw gill six of the first men enter in line but Bassett (H.), was slightly ahead halfway and had a yard or two in hand from Toomey (Fitzroy) and R. Gayton (N.P.A.) when P. Spragg took over. The lead was still more pronounced at the end of the second lap, but Jobson gained nothing from Trueman and Andyrson was left with an easy task. H? held his lead from St. George to win by. 10 yards, Fitzroy’s last string having a clear margin, over New Plymouth A. FITZROY more EXPERIENCED. Accurate placing of shots by H- J- Thomas, captain of the Winning team, was a feature of the Dalgjeish Cup water polo match in which Fitzroy beat New Plymouth by 5 goals to 1. The teams were: —■ Fitzroy.— H. J. Thomas, W. J. Tdomey, C. G. Campbell, W. J. ,C. H. Plumtree; V. Walshe and K. J. Staunton. '. New Plymouth.—-C. Shaw, L. Petty, R. Gayton,• H. Watkins, C. Allen, N. Lea'iancl and L. Dineen. From the throw-in Plumtree gained possession arid a scramble followed. Petty cleared and then Walshe secured and tossed the ball to H. J. Thomas, who goaled neatly. At the throw-in Campbell secured but was penalised for holding with two hanfis. Another free throw was awarded and enabled New Plymouth to press towards the goal, where Gay ton tested Toomey. W. J. Thomas passed to his brother, who goaled magnificently in an awkward position from ten yards out. Fitzroy 2, New Plymouth 0. Plum tree was first to reach the ball and it passed through a tussel to Staunton. Play centred around New Plymouth’s goalmouth, where Campbell tried to force, his way through Dineen’s- defence. New Plymouth drove Fitzroy back to halfway, but it was not far enough to be safe and H. J. Thomas goaled brilliantly for the third time. Fitzroy secured the advantage at the throw-in but Gayton penetrated its territory and passed to Shaw, who made a good attempt but could not pass Toomey. After half-time Alien was first to handle. , Play was slow with Fitzroy attacking for Campbell to pierce the defence With a good shot. Watkins and Gayton retired with cramp and were replaced by Gunson and Harper. Staunton, Campbell and H. J. Thomas all tried Dineen but eventually Harper got ‘the ball away from the goalmouth. Fitzroy came again and Campbell scored his second to Fitzroy’s fifth goal. 'Walshe and Dineen both retired With cramp and after Shaw had rushed play to.the Fitzroy end L. Petty scored New Plymouth’s only goal. Mr. S. Bennett, referee, shortened the spells on account of the coldness of the water. Aftr the carnival a dance was held in the Kawaroa pavilion, where the trophies won were presented by Mr. M. D. Clarke. , Detailed results are:—.
