UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

STRATFORD FARMERS CRITICISE.

’BACKBLOCK. METALLING URGED.

Members of the Stratford executive of the Farmers’ Union took exception on Saturday to the fact that men they employed .would not stick to their jobs. Mr. M. Phillips said he had had three men in succession recently. He had paid them £2 a week in addition to their keep but these men had not been satisfied and had left him to go to tlje town to get relief work at 14s a day. The chairman, Mr. M. G. Trotter, pointed out that from now on men on relief work would not be paid at the rate of 14s a day, while farmers who wanted men could select a man and arrange his wages-with him. Employers did not have to pay 14s a day. There were still miles of mud road that settlers could not afford, to metal. “Why cannot such work be done by employment?” Mr. Murray asked. There were roads in the Stratford County on which there were heaps of metal that could be spread by unemployed. “We all know what the position is but can we suggest a concrete remedy?” the chairman queried. “Yes, let ms pass a motion, urging that men be put on metalling work in backblock roads,” said Mr. Murray. It was decided to recommend to the Unemployment Board that a scheme be devised whereby settlers could avail themselves of the funds of the board in metalling roads in, the Matau district.

Mr. E. Marfell said he was disappointed that the Unemployment Board had not taken sufficient action in making money available for employing men on the eradication of ragwort. ;.The board, he said, had “so-tied things up” that the unemployed could be employed only close to the towns and there was no provision for getting men out into the country. The county councils had encountered the same difficulty in attempting to employ men on county relief works. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND. SUBSCRIPTIONS GROWING. The chief attraction at this season is the magnificent display of begonias, and the paths leading thereto were continuously thronged.
