The American athletes competed here yesterday. Simpson was in great form, winning the 100 yards in 9 4-ssee, equalling the New Zealand record, and the 220 yards in 21 1-5. beating the New Zealand record by a fifth of a second. The mile race Was a good contest, principal t interest being taken in the scratch men, Kiser, Rose and jai'idan. The American set a fast pace, covering the mile in 2min 3Sec. These early exerfirst quarter in 57 3-ssec and the hair tidns left him without a finishing effort and amidst a deafening applause Savidan ran to the front entering the straight ahd won by 12 yards from Coopdr, a local man off 25 yards. Kiser struggled on to just beat Rose. Rose was not fit, having had but three weeks’ training. ; • Kiser won the half-mile' from a weaker field. c

Rothert won the shot putting, discus and javelin throw. In the first named event he created a New Zealand record with a put of 49ft ain.
