NEW MOTOR CARGO LINER. The Otaio, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s new motor cargo liner, which arrived at Auckland from Liverpool on Thursday, was built at Messrs. VickersArmstrong’s yard at Barrow. She left Liverpool for the Dominion with a general cargo on January 4. Captain Mead, recently of the s.s. Norfolk, and one of the oldest officers of the company, was chosen to take charge of the new ship. In view of the size (490 ft. by 67ft., with gross tonnage of 10,048 and deadweight capacity of 12,610 tons), and the°speed (151 knots), the Otaio represents a notable vessel, and the company is very proud of her. The engines installed represent the largest of the Doxford type that have hitherto been constructed from the standpoint of cylinder diameter. ’The Doxford ' engines are something quite new to the company, but they have been, used by the Commonwealth and Dominion Line for some years with satisfaction and. economy. Each cylinder in the Doxford type of engine has two pistons, one thrusting down and the other up, from the same explosion, but both actuating the same shaft. All the auxiliary machinery is of up-to-date pattern? There are three 306 k.w. Diesel-driven electric generators. An entirely new system is employed in the recovery of heat from the exhaust gases. The system is used, for driving a dynamo engine, heating the crew’s accommodation, and for evaporating up to 20 tons of distilled water daily. This is used to make up for any. losses in the engine fresh-water circulating system. The refrigerated cargo space is ex-' ceptionally large, the 11 insulated ’tween deck and hold spaces having a total capacity of about 420,000 cubic feet inside the insulation, besides the insulated provision chambers on the main deck. The two quadruple CO2 compressors are of the J. and E. Hall’s type, and one can maintain the required temperature. A 165 b.h.p. variable speed motor direct coupled to the crankshaft is utilised for each compressor. The equipment includes two centrifugal seawater circulating pumps, four brine circulating pumps, and a vertical duplex plunger circulating pump for dealing with the provision rooms and the outward. cargo rooms. Four holds are each served by four 10-ton cargo derricks, and No. 1 and No. 6 holds arc each served by two 10ton derricks. A 50-ton derrick is carried for use in Nos. 2 and 3 hatchways for specially heavy lifts. There are 16 Clarke, Chapman silent worm-geared cargo winches capable of exerting a pull of six tons at 100 ft. per minute and driven by 48 h.p. motors at 200 r.p.m. Four warping winches similar to the cargo winches but with 18-in. warp ends on the outboard side and 24in. warp ends on the inboard .ide are included in the deck equipment, whilst the Clarke, -Chapman windlass is also electrically driven, coupled to a 5 h.p. motor running at 350 r.p.m. It will deal with 25-Bin. stud-link cable and can exert a direct pull of 19J tons at 25ft. per minute. Warping ends are fitted. The ship is provided with a Simplex balanced rudder. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Melbourne, February 7. —Arrived: Maheno, from Wellington.
