EARTHQUAKE WIRES.

Sir, —In connection with our National calamity there, is a development in regard to sending telegrams to Napier which I think is worthy of your comment. From this town alone many wires have beep sept by people anxious about relatives and friends, and while the local authorities made it evident that they could give no guarantee that these' would be delivered, there was no information given that. oply urgent wires would be dealt; with at Wellington as stated in the paper. Surely, sir, at a time like the present it is a scandalous thing, that a Government Department should endeavour to make extra money out of the infliction without considering the anxiety and worry caused to those poor people who have sent Ordinary wires, and are not likely to receive any reply through lack of delivery. Is

there any justification for such a distinction being made at a crisis like this? —I am, etc., i INDIGNANT. . New. Plymouth, February 6.
