HAWERA CLUB EVENING RACES.

CAPTAIN’S LEAD REDUCED.

Wintry conditions prevailed for the Hawera ’ Swimming Club’s evening last night, but despite this there were large entries and a fair number of spectators. The banner competition between ; the captain’s and vice-captain’s teams was continued, ths latter securing 18 points to the captain’s 10. Men, Boys’ and Girls’ Relay. —Men scr. 1, Boys lOsee. 2, Girls 20sec. 3. A meeting of the club committee was held at the conclusion of the sports, Mr. 0. V. Church, presiding. Sympathy was expressed with Airs. E. Higgs, who had sprained her ankle. The learn-to-swim week, reported Air. A. IV. Spragg, was more for the benefit of schoolchildren. It was hoped that'the club officials would work in conjunction with teachers. If possible transport would be arranged for country children. Any adults wishing to learn to swim would receive special attention. A committee consisting of Messrs. Spragg, D. G. Ryan, Church and A. W. Lawn was appointed to interview headmasters.

Elimination events are to be held on club evenings to choose the Hawera team for the championships. A team is to be selected to represent Hawera in the Grey Cup relay race at New Plymouth on February 7.

The purchase of coconut matting for a starting platform was left to Mr. Spragg.
