WAITARA MUNICIPAL BAND
GOOD PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE. Bright prospects for the coming year were "revealed at the annual meeting of the Waitara Municipal Band on Wednesday. The Mayor, Mr. E. A. George, (presided over a good attendance of bandsmen, few townspeople being present. The committee reported that the band under the conductorship of Mr. C. H. Sampson had shown steady, progress and many young members had joined. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2B 10s, which was satisfactory. The band had played on severed occasions, and two concerts were given in St. Jqhn's Hall on Sunday evenings with indifferent results. The main sources of revenue were four old-time dances. The Christmas carolling again proved successful, the townspeople responding liberally with the result that £22 Ils was added to the funds. Two Sunday concerts at the beach were well supported. It was recommended that the band assist the Seaside Society with not less than two open air concerts during the coming year. Prospects for the year were very bright indeed. The band played at the last annual regatta.and Easter sports meeting, and had again beeii engaged for the regatta in March. The band was taking part in a contest to be held at Hawera early in March, an<L the experience should be of great assistance to members.’ . ■ Th© president.'who had rendered much assistance to th© band for many years, did' nbt seek, re-election. That was a great' loss, and the heartiest thanks were flue, to him' for his services during the period.- ' ‘ The balance-sheet showed that the receipts‘totalled flflS 3s, which included £l4 ICs Cd brought, forward. A credit balance was sh'own. Of £23 5s lid. The main items of expenditure were band'master’s salary faO.and uniforms £lO I4s. Assets totalled £3B 15s 4d and liabilities £7 2s Cd. The Mayor .referred to the services rendered the band by. the retiring presi-, dent, Mr. T. Taylor, for many hard years, and he thought a fitting reward would be to make Mr. Taylor a life member. The conductor, with others, also spoke in an eulogistic strain and Mr. Taylor.was elected a life member amidst applause. Mr. Taylor in responding stated that after 45 yCars of public life in many avenues lie felt that it was time to take a rest. He always had had the interests of the band at heart 'and would be only too pleased to assist if the band contest were held at Waitara next year. A discussion on the latter part of Mr. Taylor’s speech .was held, th© outcome being that the Bands’ Association is to be asked to hold the next contest at Waitara.
