CLERICAL WORK OF RELIEF
RESIGNATION OF SECRETARY.
DEPARTMENT MAY’DO WORK.
Mr. W. G. Reid, honorary secretary of the- executive of the North Taranaki unemployment committee, tendered his resignation last night. The chairman (Mr. P. E.- Stainton) said he was sorry that Mr. Reid should, have found this necessary. The committee had originally been appointed till the end of this month, but the Unemployment Board w r as particularly anxious that it should remain in office till the end of February, the date to which the operation of the No. '2 scheme had been extended. After that the board hoped, to have' a permanent scheme ready. Personally he found the work a great call on his time, but he touched the fringe only, compared with the work of the secretaries. He had received a good defil'more publicity than was justified; the secretaries were the men who had. done the hard work.
He thought the time had arrived when the secretarial work must be undertaken by the Labour Department, which had. the clerical facilities, Again the council chambers had been made available to the committee by the Borough Council, but now the auditoi-’s needed it for some time and it would be necessary for the committee to find other premises. The chairman and Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths were constituted a committee to confer with the Labour Department about the matter.
Mr. C. P. Smith (Labour Department) said the matter could be discussed. There were certain points about the duplication of registrations that would have to be adjusted, " . Mr. Reid agreed to carry on in the meantime.
