BRITAIN TO ENTER RARE
SCHNEIDER CUP CONTEST PRIVATE FUNDS AVAILABLE HOPE TO END COMPETITION By Telegraph—Frees Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 29. Mr. Ramsay MacDonald has announced in the House of Commons that the Ministry was prepared to authorise an entry for the Schneider trophy if the cost is privately defrayed. It is pointed out that, having won the Schneider trophy race twice in succession, Britain with a third victory would have final possession of the trophy and end the contest.
The Prime Minister, in announcing the Government’s decision, said the deputation of members of Parliament had assured him that the money required would be raised privately so that no expense would fall on public funds. He regretted the delay which had occurred and said he recognised that it must be a disadvantage to the British entry. The Government’s decision had been reached in view of the special circumstances, for the Government was strongly averse to perpetuating these contests between rival Governments’ teams.
The Aero Club is publicly appealing for funds to defend the Schneider trophy and the Aircraft Constructors’ Society is contributing £10,500.
