FIRE BRIGADE RESIGNS
OBJECTION TO MAYOR’S LETTE*
QUARREL AT EASTBOURNE.
By Telegraph.—Brees Association.
Wellington, ■ Last Night. The resignation of the Eastbourne volunteer tire brigade has been accepted by the Eastbourne Borough Council, which has decided to call for volunteers for a new brigade. An explanation of the circumstances was made by the Mayor, Mr. H. M. Jones. He said the brigade recently found it necessary to take the fire engine to a gorse fire. Water was pumped from the sea. The engine did capita] work until the suction nozzle was put on the bed of the sea and shells, gravel and sand put the pump out of action. Mr. Jones’ attention had been drawn to several instances which he thought ca ed for a word of advice. He sent a letter to the captain of the brigade and the man in charge of ths engine saying a man must stand by the nozzle and s*ee it did not pick up shell grit. Last Afonday he had been informed that the brigade had resigned. A letter from the brigade said that owing to the letter it received and to other interference from an individual member of the council it had decided it could not carry on. Councillors considered there was noth ing in the Mayor’s letter to which the brigade or anyone could, take exception. TH Mayor said he already had obtained 'enough nominations to fill th? neW brigade.
