OLD PEOPLE ENTERTAINED

FUNCTION AT HAWERA HOME. Inmates'of the Hawera Old People’s Home were entertained by members of the Salvation Army and others on Thursday evening. Sergeant-Major J. Dowdle presided over an attendance of about' 70. ' A short programme was rendered as follows: Songs, Miss W. Mills and Mr. Glover; recitations, Mrs. Johns; duet, Ensign and Mrs. Prince; instrumental selections, the Prince family (harps, violin and mandolin) and Bandsman Foster. Mrs. West was the accompanist.

Short speeches were made by Rev. Keith Ewen and Ensign and Mrs. Prince. All stressed their desire to help to make the life of the old people more happy and interesting. Supper was enjoyed and then games ensued, under the direction of Mr. Dowdle and Ensign Prince. A vote of thanks to the visitors and party was carried by acclmatipn on the ' motion of Mr. H. Holmes, one of the inmates. MORTGAGEES AND MORTGAGORS. FARMERS’ UNION’S PROPOSAL. The personnel of the committee which the South Taranaki Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union resolved to appoint to deal with disputes and difficulties arising at present between mortgagees and mortgagors cannot be announced as yet. ' The committee is to include a competent farm valuer, an accountant, a solicitor, a practical farmer, the members of Parliament for Patea and Egm on t, a bank manager and the president of the Farmers’ Union. In the selection of the committee it is hoped to choose, as far as possible, those who will be disinterested as mortgagees or mortgagors. Care will be taken that each member will be sufficiently competent and trustworthy to deal confidentially with all matters that arise. The question of expense will always be considered. ( MANAIA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. PREPARATIONS FOR NEW YEAR.

In the absence of the chairman (the Rev. R. Miller) Mr. A. Gamlin presided at the monthly meeting of the Manaia School Committee. The business related chiefly to preparations for the reopening of the school on Monday. Arrangements were also made for the annual school picnic at Kaupokonui on Friday, February 6. The Education Board sent notice of the appointment of Mr. J. Browning, Waverley, to the headmaste rehip of the Manaia school. Other appointments included that of Mr. G. P. Clegg as assistant in the position lately held by Mr. Reed. The board intimated that it was unable to grant further subsidies in cori1 nection with any voluntary contributions which might be received. It was decided to grant a holiday for the Manaia horticultural show. CHEESEMAKERS’ DANCE. GATHERING AT PIHAMA. The workers of the Pihama dairy factories have every reason to feel gratified at the results of their annual dance held on Wednesday. Under pretty streamers of blue and gold a merry throng danced all the evening to th? pleasing strains of Reg. Henderson's popular orchestra, and all spent an enjoyable time’. Extras were played by Miss Pollock, Mr. Harris and Mr. Gordon, who is a member of the Auckland Blind Institute’s concert party -which recently visited Taranaki. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss T. Ireland and Mr. Clements and Mrs. Lockley and Mr.- Pollock. Arepot waltz was won by Miss J. Campbell and Mr. C. Fergus. A competition for a silk shirt, donated by Mr. W. V. Patterson, was won by'Mrs. J. Hall. Mr. W. Kirk officiated as M.C.

HAWERA W.C.T.U. ACTIVITIES. ARRANGEMENTS FOR CONVENTION The Hawera branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union met in the Methodist Bible Class room on Thursday. Mrs. J. EXley presided over a fair attendance, including three visitors from Eltham. Sympathy was expressed with the. relatives of Mrs. Simpson, Ing’ewopd, who was formerly a member of the district executive. Discussion took place concerning the district annual convention, to be held this year at Hawera on February 26. Mesdames Spavin and Irvine were appointed the .Hawera delegates and Mrs. R. J. Squire was appointed to receive th. visitors on arrival. It was decided to hold the convention in the Methodist Sunday School buildings. The recent shop day in Hawera had yielded the satisfactory sum of £5 5s when donations were included, reported the treasurer, Mrs. Squire. Thanks were accorded all who had assisted with donations and in the administrative work during the day. — f TALKIE THEATRE PROGRAMMES. “SHADOW OF THE LAW” AT OPERA “Shadow of the Law.” which appears at the Hawera Opera House to-day at 2 p.m. and 8.15 p.m. and on Monday night, is a new type of picture for William Powell, This role gives him none of the sophisticated superiority of the Philo Vance portrayals. Nor ret does it impose a sinister glow. The Powell of “Shadow of the Law” is a quietliving engineer drawn into a web of circumstances which land him in prison. The story is packed with drama, excitement, unusual and novel scenes, rounded, human characterisations, really great acting and solid entertainment. Reserves may be secured at Miss Blake's.
